Why shouldn't you lie?

Hey, We should all go out to eat today”
“Ohh…sorry. I have an important project to finish, hehe. Maybe next time?”
Then goes on to scroll through the phone till the sun sets.
Why do we lie? 🧠
I tried to catch myself lying and count how many times I do it in one single day. Not in a malicious way, but mostly the harmless things we say to people like in the example above.
In my last newsletter, I mentioned how I have started being more upfront about my thoughts and how it made things more interesting in my day to day life. 😌
Telling the truth in all situations - Not to be rude or offensive, but to convey what we truly feel and say it in a nice way - is one of the best things you can do to make your days more adventurous.
I was so focused on being open and honest about the big things that are in front of my eyes, that I didn’t notice the small thing we all do everyday.
White Lies. 🤐

Because when I counted how many ‘White lies’ I told in a given week, It was around 20-30 (I couldn’t count the exact numbers) 🤯
Don’t you f#ckin judge me bro lol. You try counting how many white lies you say in a given day.
I though to myself,
WHY!? Why did I say that? I could have just told the truth, it wouldn’t have mattered both ways, so why did I say that? 🤔
“We are not all murderers or robbers, but we are all liars” - Sam Harris in his book ‘Lying’
I understand why I said those tiny white lies now (after reflecting on the topic for a while). It was obviously because I was trying to be considerate and not to make the other person “Feel bad”. 🤷♂️
But, did it really help?
Would it have been better if I didn’t tell those white lies?

I read this book called ‘Lying’ by Sam Harris (forget his controversies for a sec) where he discusses how people and relationships would be better off if we don’t tell any lies at all.
It is definitely something that you should read because it’s such an interesting topic. 🔎
And because WE ALL LIE! Not maliciously (although some could be) but we say these ‘white lies’ to everybody around us without even realising we do. 🤯
For the next 1 week, every time you are in a conversation with someone, notice and try to catch yourself telling ‘white lies’.
It can be:
"Yes! I’m fine”,
“Sorry yaar, I got this stuff to do today”,
“I think this looks great”,
And even the lies you tell yourself! Such as:
‘It’s not my fault’,
‘I’m the good guy here’
‘I have done everything I could’
‘I shouldn’t reach back again’
This can hurt a lot of Ego’s but trying and doing this humbles you a lot.

“Everybody lies”, doesn’t mean you should, right? 🤔
Maybe think about it before you sleep tonight and reflect on the thought.
To end it, here’s a quote from my mum,
“If your friend jumps off from a building, will you jump along with him!?”
Try not telling ANY lies, even the harmless ones, and see how much interesting your day gets. Trust me on this.
If you have read till here, it means you kinda like reading. So if you got 1 hour, you can read the book by Sam Harris here. 📕
You’re gonna have an awesome week. (that’s not a lie) ;)
Seeya,
Kapil.
